We decided to create our custom awards to make sure every type of player is honored. For example, the NHL's Norris Trophy goes to the league's best defenseman – but it tends to always go to a defenseman who is a dominant offensive player. What about the rugged defensive defensemen? The grinding penalty-killing forwards? The most fearsome checking forwards?"The Hockey News" editors name their top five picks for all 12 awards and then the results are tabulated using a points system. A first-place vote gets five points, a second-place vote gets four points, and so on. The results are then published in the year-end "Champions" Issue.
