'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks' to debut on HBO on April 22

"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" will be debuting on HBO on April 22 at  8 p.m. EST. The film will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO Go, HBO on Demand, and other affiliate portals.

"The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" is based on the nonfiction book by Rebecca Skloot. In 1951, a 31-year-old African-American woman Henrietta Lacks is dying of cervical cancer. Under the bright lights of the operating room, the surgeons harvest the cells from her tumor and it would prove to be astonishingly immortal and would change the face of medicine forever. Though her involuntary donation remained unknown.

This story is told through the eyes of her daughter, Deborah Lacks She's aided by journalist Rebecca Skloot to set out to learn more about the mother she never knew and to understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Henrietta's cancerous cells led to several medical breakthroughs.

George C. Wolfe is the director and the stars are Oprah Winfrey, Rose Byrne, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Reg E. Cathey, Rocky Carroll, Courtney B. Vance, and Leslie Uggams.

The executive producers are Alan Ball, Peter Macdissi, Oprah Winfrey, Carla Gardini, and Lydia Dean Pilcher. The co-executive producer is Rebecca Skloot.
