The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today (Dec. 21), that 336 feature films are eligible for consideration. So they are going to have to do a lot of cutting down by Jan. 24, 2017, when the nominations are announced.
For those who are wondering what it takes to get on on the list, first you have to have a feature-length motion picture that has a running time of more than 40 minutes and it must be exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film or in a qualifying digital format. Also, your film must be open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight on Dec. 31 and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.
So that's just some of the rules on how a film gets qualified. Some of those who are on this extremely large list are "American Honey," "Arrival," "The Boy," "Cafe Society," "Don't Breathe," "Elle," Hail, Caesar!," "Jason Bourne," "Jackie," "La La Land," "Pete's Dragon," "Race," Star Trek Beyond," "The Witch," and "Zoolander 2." If you feel up to it you can read (and download) the whole PDF list here.
