Kino Lorber announces the theatrical release of Berlinale winner, 'Ixcanul'

Kino Lorber is proud to announce the much-anticipated theatrical release of "Ixcanul." The film is the debut feature by Guatemalan filmmaker, Jayro Bustamante. "Ixcanul" is a powerful drama about the culture clash in Kaqchikel, which is located in the Guatemalan highlands. The film will be opening at the IFC Center in New York City on August 19. It will be opening in other cities across the U.S., which includes the cities Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.

"Ixcanul" was the winner of the Silver Bear Alfred Bauer prize at the 2015 Berlinale. The film prize is the most prestigious film prize ever received by a Central American production. It was also in the official selection at the Toronto Film Festival, Telluride, and many of the other leading international film festivals.
The film was Guatemala's Academy Award entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category too.
Bustamante drew from real-life stories (including the trafficking of children in Guatemala), which he wrote the narrative with the point of view of the mother. He used non-actor members from the Mayan community. The film explores the lives of a fading way of life against the backdrop of a Westernized Culture.
